Biography of Elisha Cross

Elisha Cross (1802-1893) was the owner of Cross Tavern on the Grand River road in Wayne County. He married Sarah Slokum in 1835, and of their three children, only one daughter, Susan, survived. She married Mark Hance in 1856 and, according to a note provided by the donor, the Hance farm in Farmington, Michigan was the north end of the Underground Railroad. In his later years Elisha Cross moved to Detroit where he owned a considerable amount of real estate.

Scope and Contents note

The Elisha Cross papers include an illustrated physics manual given to Cross in 1832 by John B. Calhoun ("President of the Moulders of the Howell Works Co."). Cross and his daughter, Susan, used the manual for a personal journal, scrapbook and botanical notebook (including plant specimens). The papers also contain a photographic copy of a drawing of the Hance farm and documents related to real estate Cross owned in the Detroit area.
