Biographical Note
Steven C. Lamphear was born on November 1, 1935 to Helen and Ray Lamphear in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in East Lansing where his father worked for Michigan State University as a manager in housing services.
Lamphear attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. During his service with the U.S. Navy, he participated in Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica.
Lamphear earned his Ph.D. in natural resource management from the School of Forestry at University of Georgia in 1969. He joined the faculty in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, School of Natural Resources, University of Missouri Columbia. He retired with professor emeritus status.
In 1970, he married Judith Ann McKinnon and they had two daughters. Lamphear died on September 5, 2004 in Saint Augustine, Florida.
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains photographs from the U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica. The images show construction, facilities, people, activities and equipment. There are also blueprint plans for "Little America Five," the main base for the United States Navy's "Expedition Deep Freeze" (1959) and a blueprint plot plan for McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (1959).
