Biographical Note

Barrett Lyons was born on October 28, 1903 and received his A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1925. He then, briefly, taught English at Michigan State University as an instructor. In 1938, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master's Degree in Social Work, and then became involved in the welfare programs around Michigan. Barrett Lyons retired in 1961, and became an associate professor at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work. He retired from this post in 1969. He died May 10, 1988 at his home in East Lansing.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains letters, brochures, and a rough draft of a booklet entitled, "Adoption Laws and Related Court Procedure in Michigan." The letters are between Lyons and Ruth Bowen, then head of the Children's Division of Welfare, and concern the rough draft of the booklet and possible revisions. The brochures describe the White Steam Car, Baker Boiler, and the Delling Steam Car including two photographs. The rough draft of "Adoption Laws and Related Court Procedure in Michigan," written by Maxine Boord Virtue, also included, contains editing marks and revisions.
