Biographical Note

William was born September 8, 1796 in Grandby, Massachusetts to Noah and Hannah Ferry. He graduated from Union College in New Jersey and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1822. In 1823, he married Amanda White. The family moved to Mackinac Island where he established a school. The family moved to Grand Haven in 1834. He died December 30, 1867 in Grand Haven, Michigan.

His wife, Amanda White, was born August 20, 1797 in Ashfield, Massachusetts. She died December 20, 1880 in Grand Haven.

Scope and Contents note

Typed excerpts (1823-1831) from the letters from William Montague Ferry and his wife Amanda, Protestant missionaries on Mackinac Island, Michigan, to family members in New England, especially those in Ashfield, Massachusetts. Of particular interest are descriptions of the Indians and references to opposition from the Roman Catholic Church. Also included are brief genealogies of the Ferry, Montague, Henry, Hastings, White, and Harwood families.
