Scope and Contents note
This collections contains records, account books and letterbooks of Captain Benjamin D. Pritchard, Commanding Officer of Company L, 4th Michigan Cavalry, dating from August, 1862, to July, 1865. Pritchard, who later rose to the rank of brigadier general, commanded the regiment when it captured Jefferson Davis near Macon, Georgia on May 10, 1865. He was State Treasurer and Commissioner of Public Lands for the State of Michigan for the years 1879-1880, and later became President of the First National Bank of Allegan, Michigan.
The military materials include two ledger books (1862-1864), five folders of invoices and receipts, and an inventory of Company L's weapons, ammunition, clothing, horses, and track. There are also several roll call issues of supplies.
One ledger gives the daily cash account of the State Treasury Office for the period of 1879-1880 when Pritchard was State Treasurer. The rest of the papers consist of Pritchard's personal and business accounts. Two ledgers, covering the years 1882-1884, 1886-1887, and 1889, list grocery prices and dry good prices. One also includes prices and names of purchasers of heavy farm equipment and the accounts of School District #1, Allegan Township, including the fiscal report for 1893.
Also included are two circulars from the War Department concerned with ordinance stores, on General Order concerning four cases tried by a military commission in 1863, an American Express envelope with two letters, and a letter of administration of a will, issued on 1911.
