Biographical/Historical

"The Exile's Return" is a narrative by Samuel Snow which describes his participation in a raid into Canada in 1838, organized by Americans calling themselves "Patriots," who hoped to drive the British out of Canada. The raid accomplished almost nothing, and Snow and several other Patriots were captured. They were tried, found guilty, and transported to Van Dieman's Land, now Tasmania. Snow describes the voyage to Van Dieman's Land and his experiences there, especially the anarchic conditions of life in a country that was part wilderness and part penal colony. Snow received a pardon in 1844 and eventually made his way back to America, traveling part of the way on a whaling ship and spending several months in the Hawaiian Islands, waiting for a ship.
