Biographical Note

Bela B. Berry, Jr. was born in Brewster, Massachusetts on October 26,1831. He commanded the barques "Young Turk" and "Nautilus" in the Mediterranean trade, and barques "Sumter," "Philomena," "Mountain Wave " and "Central America" in the South American trade. He sailed from New York for London, February 20, 1863, in command of barque "Augusta," and was never heard from after leaving New York. Scope and Contents note

This collection contains the logbook of the commercial sailing vessel Sumter. The logbook records a round-trip voyage from Boston to Chile in 1858. The ship (barque) was commanded by Captain Bela B. Berry. Two pages of the log were later used as a scrapbook for published poetry and articles.
