Biographical Note
William A. Eaegle of Clinton County, Michigan was born October 1837 in Ohio, son of Gabe Eaegle. He enlisted in Company B of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry on October 7, 1861 at age 21. He mustered out in Texas on February 12, 1866. He married Emma Daggett in 1864. He died October 23, 1917 in Cadillac, Michigan. (Note: The last name is sometimes spelled Eagle.)
Emma Daggett Eaegle was born December 1845.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists primarily of Civil War letters received by Emmiline (Emma) Daggett, of Clinton County, Michigan. Emma received letters from her brother Will in the 10th Michigan Cavalry, her cousin George Daggett in the 33rd New York Infantry, and other friends in those regiments. The letters describe the soldiers' experiences but are primarily concerned with home matters. The bulk of the letters are from William Eaegle of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, who married Emma Daggett in 1864. Eaegle served in the western theater during the war, and later on garrison duty in Texas. His letters discuss political and military events as well as his own experiences and family matters. Post-war materials in the collection include postcards to the Eaegles from family and friends, and a railroad pass issued to William Eaegle.
