Scope and Contents note
The Dunks family papers consist primarily of correspondence addressed to Oliver Dunks of Detroit and Coldwater, Michigan, the bulk of which is dated in the 1860s. The letters discuss business, agriculture, and social activities in Southern Michigan. Several also deal with important aspects of the Civil War period, such as "Copperhead" feeling in the North, the election of 1864, and Lincoln's assassination.
Of particular interest are letters from Julius Dunks discussing the presidential election returns in November, 1864 (folder 5); and letters dated April, 1865 describing memorial events in Detroit following Lincoln's death (folder 8). A letter from John Hughes describes oil well drilling in Venago County, Pennsylvania in 1865 (folder 8).
Also included are several letters from E.O. Burton, a student at Olivet College, discussing college life and activities (1864-1865). Other documents in the collection include an announcement of a political rally at Coldwater, Michigan (1864) and advertisements for watches and ready-made clothing (1865).
