Biographical Note
Thomas (T. J.) Davis met Lucinda Mary Spaulding in Wisconsin in 1858 and they were married there in October 1861. A month later he enlisted in the army. Except for a twenty-day furlough in February 1862, they were separated until the end of the Civil War in 1865. In these years Davis served in the 18th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers; and in the Pioneer Corps, 3rd Division, Army of Tennessee. He was stationed in Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Scope and Contents note
The Davis family papers consist primarily of the collection of over 180 letters written by Thomas (T. J.) to his wife, Lucinda, during the Civil War. Also included are Lucinda Davis' reminiscences and an obituary prepared when she died.
The collection also includes transcriptions of the letters done by Thomas Nanzig.
