Biographical Note

Emma Miller of Chickaming, Berrien County, Michigan was engaged to Captain Mark D. Flower, who was attached to Headquarters, District of Memphis, Army of the Tennessee during the Civil War.

Mark D. Flower was born March 31, 1842 in Chagrin, Ohio and came with his family to Minnesota around 1855. In 1857, he began attendance at the Aurora Institute in Illinois. He left prior to graduating to enlist.

Flower initially mustered into the Company C of the 7th Illinois Infantry. When his term ended, he hoped to enlist in the Navy but ended up in Company A of the 36th Illinois Cavalry. This unit merged into Company I of the 15th Illinois Cavalry where he served until January 1865. He transferred to Company M of the Illinois 10th Cavalry until mustering out on June 5, 1865.

Flower served at the headquarters of the District of Memphis, Army of the Tennessee. While stationed at Memphis, Tennessee, Flower married Lena Gutherz in October 1864.

After the war, he returned to Minnesota where he was a US Supervising Inspector of Steamboats, Minnesota Adjutant General, Deputy Collector of Customs and member of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Mark D. Flower died February 3, 1907.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of correspondence (1862-1864) received by Emma Miller of Chickaming, Berrien County, Michigan during the Civil War. Most of the letters were written by her fiance, Captain Mark D. Flower, who was attached to Headquarters, District of Memphis, Army of the Tennessee. In addition to frequent expression of his affection, Flower describes the battle of Iuka, Mississippi, and gives an account of headquarters routine.
