Historical Note
The Capitol Rebekah Lodge No. 274was historically located on 121 N. Washington Ave., Lansing, Michigan and was a women’s society branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The I.O.O.F is an American branch of one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal orders and was founded in 1819. The Rebekah’s branch began in 1851 as the female counterpart of the Odd Fellows but today includes both men and women. The group’s motto “Friendship, Love, and Truth” is based on the characters and behaviors of notable biblical women and the lodge is dedicated to helping the less fortunate and contributing to local and international communities. The peak of national membership of I.O.O.F was in 1915 when membership reached 3.4 million.
Scope and Contents note
The Capitol Rebekah Lodge Records include ledgers of attendance, correspondence, annual meeting proceedings of Rebekah Assembly of Michigan, and meeting minutes. Also included are financial records, which consist of account books ranging from 1905- 1954 and receipts. The membership materials include rosters, petitions for membership, transfers and withdrawals and miscellaneous papers.
