Historical Note
The Michigan Women's Studies Association was founded in 1973 by five Michigan State University faculty members. The organization promotes equal opportunites for women as well as developes new ways to teach women's studies in education institutions. The organization also developed the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in Lansing, Michigan.
Scope and Contents note
The records of the Michigan Women's Studies Association include minutes from the Board of Directors, records relating to annual conferences, projects, exhibits, special events as well as presidential administrative records. Other materials include correspondence, news releases, newsletters, and information about the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame and Cooley-Haze House. There is also presidential correspondence and the resource files of Betty MacDowell for the publication "Michigan Women: First and Founders." The resource files include files on individual women and women's issues.
The records were left in their original arrangement after transfer from the organization. A detailed description can be found in the Series Description section of the finding aid. However, the order in which the material is described does not match the arrangement.
Series Description
The following record series have been determined by Gladys Beckwith, founder and director of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame, to be of historical value.
MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS. 1981-2003* Narrative minutes of regular and special meetings of the Board relates to all business, staff searches, fund raising, projects and includes reports of officers, staff, and committee chairpersons and support groups, ie., the Hall of Fame Advisory Council. Arranged chronologically. *Minutes after 2003 are considered current and in the office of the director of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame.
RECORDS RELATING TO ANNUAL CONFERENCES. 1987-2002,* 2004-2006, * 2008 May include agendas, minutes of meetings, correspondence, program development, financial statements, informationals, guidelines for presenters, and, occasionally, abstracts and copies of papers proposed or presented. Also includes letters in supporting establishment of a Hall of Fame, 1979-1980. * An anniversary celebration took place in 2003 in lieu of a conference. There was no conference scheduled in 2007.
ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS OF THE PRESIDENT. 1974-1987 Relates to annual membership meeting, May 5, 1984; Constitution and By-laws, 1981; course descriptions; election results; lease of Cooley-Haze House from the City of Lansing, 1982; minutes of the annual membership meeting, May 5,1984; minutes of the Hall of Fame Advisory Council, 1881; minutes of the Board of Directors, November 17, 1980, February 13, 1980, February 3, 1981, January 8, 1984 and September 22, 1985; minutes of the Steering Committee, 1974, 1979; policy statements; reports of the President, October 25, 1979, September 15, 1979 and December 27, 1979; and rules and regulations governing admission to the Hall of Fame, undated. REPORTS OF AUDIT. 1983-1998 (15 vols.); 2002-2008 Compiled financial statements with accompanying information, submitted by Maner, Costerian & Ellis, pc., Certified Public accountants. Includes statements of financial position, activities, functional expenses, cash flow and notes on accounting policies, nature of organization, risks and uncertainties, investments, property and equipment, donated items and services, lease, special events, temporary restricted net assets, permanently restricted net assets, change in accounting method. Arranged chronologically.

Also includes similar material accumulated the President of MWSA. No arrangement.

CORRESPONDENCE RELATING TO THE ELIZABETH LEHMAN BELEN ART GALLERY. 1987 Includes a letter in from Lucile E. Belen, April 11, 1987; memorandum from Gladys Beckwith, Director of Michigan Women's Studies Association to the Board of Directors about the designation, March 6, 1987; a brief biography of Elizabeth Lehman Belen, undated; and a faded note elating to use of a donation from Frederick Belen, October 16,1987.
RESOURCE FILE RELATING TO EXHIBITS. 1988-2003 This file appears to be selected by the Education Director. Mainly correspondence, loan agreements, biographies of exhibitors, financial statements and informational material relating to exhibits created for viewing in the Center and for traveling to school, cubs and like outlets. Examples of major exhibits relate to The Century of Women Exhibit, 1991-1999; Celebrating Women in Criminal Justice, 1996; and circus.
