Biographical Note
Raymond Bowers was born on July 24, 1891 in New York City. Throughout school, Raymond's major focus was on music; this probably coming from his parents who often incorporated music into their home life. Instead of going to college, Raymond trained at the old Institute of Musical Art of the city of New York, earning several diplomas, including his teaching certificate. He was married on January 17, 1918 to Adele Bowers, but unfortunately was quickly deployed by the Navy. He served as a convoy signalman during World War I until 1919, when he joined the Wilde Conservatory of Music in Lansing, Michigan. While in Lansing, he and his wife had three children Richard, Francis, and Josephine. He taught at the Conservatory until 1929, when he signed on as a faculty member of Hillsdale College. He taught piano, organ, and music theory at Hillsdale from 1929 until his retirement in 1958. It was also during his teaching at Hillsdale that he earned his masters from New York University. On January 14, 1969, Raymond Bowers died of a heart attack.
Scope and Contents note
The bulk of the Raymond Lyon Bowers papers consist of his original sheet music. The sheet music covers early compositions in school to later unpublished works. The music is either on loose paper or in composition notebooks. Bowers had numbered all of his sheet music and created a numerical list. This order has been maintained in the collection, with the exception of the materials on his opera, Legends of Alhambra. The materials relating to the opera have been pulled from the sheet music and placed in its own series. Unfortunately a few of Bowers' original compositions were not received with his collection, but these are in the minority.
The Bowers papers also contain some personal materials. There are diaries of Bowers that cover several years as well as some early schoolwork including papers and drawings. Included are some photographs of Bowers, as well as some family members, his grandparents' house in Newport, Rhode Island, and naval training exercises. There are also a number of slides showing a fishing trip, family members, stained glass windows, his 50th wedding anniversary in 1986, and rugs.
