Scope and Contents note

The collection contains 35 letters and 2 homemade account journals. Eight letters (1849-1899) were written by relatives of Mrs. Kellogg. The other letters, written to or by Mrs. Kellogg (nee Rogers) or her relatives (1923-1938) relate rural life during the Great Depression. The letters are from Springfield; Ganges, Michigan; Alaedon; Burlington, Iowa; Mason, Michigan; Goshen, Indiana; Orchards, Washington; Andrews, Indiana; Detroit, Michigan; Elkhart, Indiana; Clinton, Oklahoma; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Eaton Rapids, Michigan; Lansing, Michigan; Royal Oak, Michigan; Plainwell, Michigan; and San Francisco, California. The two account journals by the father of Mrs. Kellogg (Sydney Morris Rogers - born September 19, 1869; died April 13, 1941) give a detailed, to-the-penny, accounting of household expenses during the Depression. Also included are two items written by Mrs. Kellogg: "History of the James Ingals Rogers Family," and a booklet of poems. Also, two school newspapers (1867) printed by a boy named Willis F. Cornell; a history paper (1889) by Bion C. Place, a relative of Mrs. Kellogg and some newspaper clippings on various topics.
