Biographical Note
George Rupp was a land surveyor, sales agent and land owner in Bessemer, Gogebic County, Michigan at the turn of the Twentieth Century. His correspondence indicates that he acted as a local contact for investors in Upper Peninsula mining and timber lands. At their request, he would survey land tracts for mineral and timber resources, and act as a sales agent, charging a fee.
In May 1902, with money provided by Otto B. Olson, Rupp purchased numerous parcels of Gogebic County land at tax sales. An agreement dated July 8, 1902 gave Rupp and Olson each a half interest in the future sale or redemption of these lands. Rupp died before 1913. His wife, Mary C. Rupp, took over his half interest.
Scope and Contents note
The collection includes a number of mineral maps of Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, three letterpress books of correspondence, an account book of the lands purchased in 1902, two lumber grading booklets, an 1880 land deed, the agreement between Rupp and Olson, some land redemption correspondence (1913 and 1915), and a large photograph of Bessemer, Michigan.
