Historical Note
The Kiwanis Club, a men's service organization, was founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1915, and became Kiwanis International a year later with the establishment of a club in Canada. The East Lansing Club was organized in November 1949 and chartered in January 1950.
The East Lansing Club won numerous awards for achievement in both the Michigan District of Kiwanis International and the larger organization. In 1968, it was named the Best Club, Gold Section (101 member or more), by Kiwanis International, the highest honor attainable. Attainment of the award was based on attendance, community service, promotional activities and fund raising.
The club has carried out a number of projects, including a community chicken barbecue, rummage sales, children's baseball, establishment of Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops for retarded children, support of Camp Better Hearing (a camp for the hearing impaired), and other community improvement and fund-raising activities.
Scope and Content
The East Lansing Kiwanis Club records consist of general correspondence (1957-1971), weekly news bulletins (1955-1987), financial records (1956-1964; 1967-1970), and materials relating to the club's 20th Anniversary (1970) and to the projects listed above. Other materials include booklets and printed material on Kiwanis international, reports and convention programs of the Michigan district, and a scrapbook.
