Biographical/Historical

BAILEY, BOB. Bailey (1885-) worked in a number of logging camps in Benzie County, Michigan. Included in the interview is a description of the use and operation of a steam hauler.

BARGERSTOCK, JAMES. Bargerstock (1871-1972) gives a brief account of his lumbering experience in the Benzie County, Michigan area in the 1890s.

BATES, LLOYD. Bates (1879-1974) was a lumberjack in the Benzie County, Michigan area during the early twentieth century. He discusses logging procedures, particularly the use of the "big wheels"; the area around Honor, Michigan; and personalities of the era.

CARRIER, CLAUDE. Carrier describes working for the Carter Siding Chemical Company in Michigan. He describes the various types of kilns and procedures used in the production of charcoal from hardwood.

CONKLIN, FRANK. Conklin (1873-1973) worked for a few years as a lumberjack in the Benzie County, Michigan area. He also ran a hardware store in Honor, Michigan; worked as a blacksmith; and worked for the Seymour and Peck Company in mills in Illinois and Arkansas.

DAIR, BESSIE. Dair (1886-1968) was a lifelong resident of Benzie County, Michigan. She describes the river drives on the Betsie River, a sawmill her brother operated, and fishing in the area.

GILROY, ALLEN. Born in Ontario, Canada, Gilroy (1884-1969) later moved to Benzie County, Michigan. Gilroy was both a farmer and lumberman. He describes some of his experiences including how one camp ousted its cook.

GILROY, RICHARD. Gilroy (1877-1967) was born in Ontario, Canada, and spent most of his life in Benzie County, Michigan. He describes his twenty years in the logging camps working at several jobs, and various people involved in lumbering.

GORIVAN, LUMAN. Gorivan (1868-1971) participated in numerous river drives on the Betsie River in Benzie County, Michigan. He discusses logging camps, lumber mills,and the Charles Wright murder case. Gorivan tells of his grandfather emigrating from Ireland and of his father who fought in the Civil War and settled in Michigan.

GRAY, GORDON N. Gray (1895-1968) worked for several years in Benzie County, Michigan. He describes his job of hauling logs with his team from the logging camps to the various loading areas. Gray also comments on camps and events in the Benzie County area (1910-1920).

HAMMER, GEORGE. Hammer (1880-1970) worked in a number of lumbering camps in the Benzie County, Michigan area. He describes the camps, major lumbering personalities in the area, and a Benzie County forest fire (circa 1891).

HOOKER, RALPH E. Hooker (1886-1965), a lifelong resident of Benzie County, Michigan, was considered an outstanding crosscut sawyer. He describes early twentieth-century logging camps in Michigan.

JOHNSON, LOUIS. Johnson (1881-1967) spent most of his life in the Benzie County, Michigan area. He describes various places, people and events, mostly concerning lumbering (circa 1890-1910).

JOY, ELLSWORTH EMMETT. Joy (1895-) worked in logging camps in the Benzie County, Michigan area in the early twentieth century. He describes camp life, social mores, and the different positions and tasks of the various lumberjacks such as chore boy, swamper, road monkey and top loader. Also included is information on a 1912 river drive down the Betsie River to remove "deadheads".

LINDY, BERGA. From 1915 to 1921, Lindy worked for the Desmond Charcoal Chemical Company in Benzie County, Michigan. He was clerk and then head of the company store.

LONG, JACOB. Long (1862-1966) was born in Ohio and spent most of his life in the Benzie County, Michigan area. He discusses river drives on the Betsie River and his varied experiences in logging camps. There are additional comments on drilling a railroad tunnel in the West.

OLIVER, ROY. Oliver (1884-1973) worked on steam tugs and fishing ships on Lake Michigan and in lumberyards in the Benzie County, Michigan area . He discusses, among other things, shipping, schooners, the towing of log booms, life-saving crews, and ships in distress.

ROCKWELL, LEON A. Rockwell (1891-1967) describes the operation of the Cutler and Thomas broom handle factory that was located in Benzie County, Michigan. He describes how logs are made into broom handles, and the fire which destroyed the factory in 1902. Included is a description of his work as bookkeeper for Buckley and Douglas at their lumbering camp in Kalkaska County, Michigan in 1914.

ROWE, EFFIE BROWN. Rowe (1890-) was a cook in various lumbering camps in the early twentieth century in Michigan. He describes the types, storage, and preparation of food and the particular problems of a camp cook. There is also material on the operation of the camps and mills.

SEARS, WILLIAM D. Sears (1874-1974) spent most of his life in Benzie County, Michigan. He describes his work in a sawmill, and people in the area.

SHERRIFF, GEORGE. Sherriff (1891-1973) was a lumberjack in Michigan during the early twentieth century. He describes the different jobs he held and various camp operations. He comments on the lives and attitudes of lumbermen as well as on an ongoing feud between the men in one lumber camp and those in a sawmill.

STRATTON, GRANT. Stratton (1884-1968) was born in Canada and spent most of his life in Benzie County, Michigan. He discusses the river drives on the Betsie River, learning how to ride the logs, and his work for the Empire Lumber Company and the Crane Lumber Company.

Scope and Contents note

Oral History This collection is an oral history of hardwood logging in and around Benzie County, Michigan from 1890 to 1920. A good description of the work and life of loggers, cooks, and other employees of logging camps in Northern Michigan was obtained through taped interviews with the following people:

All taped interviews but two (with Mrs. Bargerstock and Lillian Sibbit) have been edited, transcribed and a brief description of each one is listed below. Along with these is an introductory article giving a general outline of the lumbering situation at that time. Copies of the original tapes are included.

Photographs The collection also contains copies of photographs from various sources. The majority of the copies were made by taking a photograph of an original photograph. The MSU Archives does not have copyright to the copies or originals.

The photographs include images of lumbering in Michigan, lumbering camps, and people involved with lumbering. Counties include Antrim County, Benzie County, Genesee County, Grand Traverse County, Iron County, Kalkaska County, Leelanau County, Manistee County, and Wexford County.

Michigan towns and places include Aral, Arcadia, Arcadia Lake, Averytown, Bear Lake, Beaver Island, Beulah, Benton Harbor, Benzonia, Betsie River, Cadillac, Carter’s Siding, Cedar River, Chase, Cheboygan, Copemish, Crescent, Crystal City, Crystal Lake, Duck Lake, East Jordon, Edgewater, Elberta, Empire Junction, Frankfort, Happy Valley, Homestead, Honor, Inland, Kenneth, Kenton, Lake Ann, Lakewood, Mandona, Manistee, Nessen City, North Manitou, Norwegian Town, O’Neil, Pearl Lake, Platte Lake, Point Betsie, Spencer, Sugar Bush, Thompsonville, Traverse City, Turtle Lake, Wallin, and Water.

In addition there are images of schools, railroads, towns, steam ships, and towns that are related to the lumbering areas in Michigan. There are also images of California lumbering including Sharta County, as well as few images of lumbering in Washington including Cascades, Puget Sound, Seattle, and Fort Ludlow.
