Biographical Note

Seymour H. Person, a "wet" republican (he was opposed to prohibition), was elected to the United States House of Representatives by the Sixth District of Michigan in 1930. During his term, prohibition was protected by the 18th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution, which Person fought to repeal. In 1932, he was defeated by "dry" Democrat Grant Hudson, whom he had defeated in the previous election. After his term expired, Person intended to organize a new law firm and settle down to the life of a lawyer.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains correspondence between Person and his two close friends and advisors, Frank Young and Colonel Alger. Also included are several articles giving viewpoints on the prohibition issue, and congressional bills, noticeably the Beck-Linthicum Bill (an amendment to the 18th Amendment), also relating to prohibition. One telegram warns Person of the conditions in copper mines in Michigan, hinting at labor-management trouble.
