- Abstract:
-
Land cover data for the Northern Lower peninsula of Michigan, specifically section 7 of Albert's ecoregions for Michigan, derived from classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery. Image dates between 1992-1994 were used to identify 32 land cover classes. The data is stored in a raster format with a cell resolution of 30 meters. Data is available in Erdas Imagine 8.3.1 image format. Data is in the Michigan Georef coordinate system.
- Purpose:
-
This data was developed as a part of the Michigan GAP analysis project. Information produced by the Michigan GAP program will help provide an overview of the distribution and management status of Michigan's wildlife and land cover biodiversity. The land cover data set is only one product of MI GAP, but is critical for vegetation distribution and associated wildlife species distribution modeling.

See "Data_Quality_Information" section for image acquisition dates. See "Entity_and_Attribute_Information" section for class list and class definitions. Classification was done for the Michigan DNR (MIDNR) by Maclean Consultants Ltd. (Houghton, MI). Ancillary data used during the classification effort included digital National Wetland Inventory, MIRIS 1978 land cover, Albert's ecoregions of MI, and aerial photography at various scales. A post classification accuracy assessment was also carried out using both aerial photography and ground truthing. Finally, the data was checked by MIDNR using MIRIS, USGS, and other data sources. Some classes were aggregated in the final product due to class confusion in the original classification. For more complete treatment of the classification protocol, see the "Draft WISCLAND/Upper Midwest Gap analysis program image processing protocol, Version 1.5" by Lillesand et al. (1995, final version 1998) - available from the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center of the USGS (<http://www.umesc.usgs.gov>). Exceptions to the Upper Midwest image processing protocol included:
1) agricultural training and accuracy assessment sites were identified in a similar fashion to non-agricultural areas
2) radiometric normalization reference sites were not identified
3) single date imagery was used for the Lake Michigan islands and the Alpena area of Region 6 Mio
4) Albert's (1994) ecological subsection boundaries helped guide the delineation of SCCUs from TM imagery.
5) urban and excavation areas were manually extracted through examination of USGS 1:100,000 scale maps rather than via TIGER files
6) wetlands were not separated from uplands on the Lake Michigan islands due to the lack of digital NWI data for these islands at the time of image classification.
7) post classification accuracy assessment was designed to randomly select SCCU/land cover combinations and assign an adequate sample size to result in a significant test of accuracy. Approximately 1475 accuracy assessment locations were evaluated. All SCCUs with the exception of Region 2sw and the Lake Michigan islands contained accuracy assessment locations; however, not all cover types were assessed in each SCCU. MIDNR black and white infrared aerial photography (1:15840, 1997-1999, leaf on) was primarily used for the accuracy assessment.

The accuracy of the vegetation and land cover map was assessed in great detail. A post classification accuracy assessment was carried out using both aerial photography and ground truthing. Post classification accuracy assessment was designed to randomly select spectrally consistent classification units (SCCUs) and assign an adequate sample size to result in a significant test of accuracy. Approximately 1475 accuracy assessment locations were evaluated. Overall accuracy for all 1475 points was 80.20 percent with a Kappa (Khat) value of 0.7837. See below for overall accuracy figures for each class. For more complete treatment of the accuracy assessment (including error matrices for each SCCU), see the MI-GAP Northern Lower Peninsula land cover final report (available from MIDNR).

Most processing completed under contract by Maclean Consultants Ltd. (Houghton, MI)for the Michigan DNR (MIDNR). For a complete treatment of the classification protocol, see the "Draft WISCLAND/Upper Midwest Gap analysis program image processing protocol, Version 1.5" by Lillesand et al. (1995, final version 1998) - available from the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center of the USGS (<http://www.umesc.usgs.gov>). A 14-step summary of the Upper Midwest Gap analysis program classification process follows (see "Identification_Information - Supplemental_Information" section above for exceptions to these 14 steps):
1) Delineate all cloud-covered areas in the scene and remove them from both image dates.
2) Delineate all urban areas in the scene and remove them from both image dates.
3) Compute principal components for urban areas separately for each date and combine the first three principal components from each date into a single urban principal component file.
4) Use unsupervised clustering of the principal component bands to classify all urban areas into categories of "High intensity urban" and "Low intensity urban". Retain these pixels for subsequent replacement into the final classification and mask them out from the TM scenes.
5) Delineate spectrally consistent classification units (SCCUs) in the original nonurban image data set based on photomorphic interpretation of the ecoregion map.
6) Within each SCCU, compute principal components for each image date separately for all remaining pixels in the parent data set (original - [clouds + "High intensity urban" + "Low intensity urban"]). Combine the first three principal components for each date into a single nonurban image data set.
7) Delineate all wetlands in each SCCU and remove them from the image.
8) Classify wetland areas in each SCCU using unsupervised clustering (or guided clustering) followed by maximum likelihood classification.
9) For any cloud-covered wetland areas, apply the original principal component transform to the cloud-free date and classify.
10) Classify nonurban upland areas in each SCCU using guided clustering followed by maximum likelihood classification.
11) For any cloud-covered nonurban uplands, apply the original principal component transform to the cloud-free date and classify using unsupervised clustering.
12) For any cloud-covered urban areas, apply the original principal component transform to the cloud-free date and classify.
13) Insert the "High intensity urban," "Low intensity urban," wetlands, and all single-date cloud-free classified areas into the nonurban upland classified data set.
14) Use ancillary data to classify all areas cloud covered in both image dates.

Final processing was completed by MIDNR personnel after delivery of classified data by Maclean Consultants Ltd. (Houghton, MI). This included error checking which resulted in changes to some classes and elimination of a portion of the initial image as detailed below. Some classes were eliminated due to zero pixel counts and some classes were combined with other classes due to low pixel count and/or class confusion. The following 7 classes were eliminated entirely due to zero pixel counts: Savanna, Jack Pine/Oak Barren, Oak/White Pine/Red Pine, White Pine/Red Pine, Hemlock, Upland White Cedar, Upland White Cedar/Aspen/Birch. The following 5 classes were lumped with another class due to low pixel counts - the final class is listed in parentheses: Jack Pine Barren (Jack Pine), Aspen/Pine (Aspen/Birch), Aspen/Oak (Aspen/Birch), Black Ash (Mixed Lowland Hardwood), Tamarack (Mixed Lowland Conifer). The following 2 pairs of classes were lumped together due to class confusion: Agricultural forage crops lumped with Agricultural row crops to make final Agricultural crops class; Mixed lowland conifer lumped with Mixed conifer/hardwood to make final Mixed lowland conifer/hardwood class. Also, a small portion in extreme southeast corner of the initial classified image (Region 2s in the initial classified data) was deleted due to unresolved class confusion, especially between shrub and aspen/birch classes. This area is not included in the final data set.
