Baker, Harriet Newell Woods (Mrs. Madeline Leslie) 19 August 1815 - 27 April 1893 The Bound Boy and The Young Soldier (1862)

This author was born at Andover, Massachusetts to the Rev. Leonard and Abigail (Wheeler) Woods. Her father was president of Andover theological seminary, and she was educated at the Abbott female academy in Andover. She married the Rev. Abijah R. Baker in 1835. In 1850, she began to write stories for children under the pen names of Mrs. Madeline Leslie and “Aunt Hattie.” She wrote approximately two hundred books including The Courtesies of Wedded Life (1855), Tim the Scissors Grinder (1861), The Leslie Stories (1865), Worth and Wealth (1865), The Sisters at Service (1879), True and False Pride (1879), and Fashion and Folly (1880). She also wrote several series such as the six volumes of The Sunshine Series and Happy Home Series. She collaborated with her husband, Rev. Abijah R. Baker on the two volumes of Theology and Romance.
