The following pages from About Orchids: A Chat (1893) are examples of different scanning methods and image formats.

MSU TIF images were produced by MSU Digital & Multimedia Center staff, using a Hewlett-Packard color flatbed ScanJet 5100C with a 9x12 scanner bed. The image specifications were 400 dpi resolution, 24-bit color depth, saved as TIF files.

MoBot TIF images were produced by Chris Freeland, Web Group Project Leader at the Missouri Botanical Garden, using a digital camera. The image specifications were: 800 dpi resolution, 8-bit color depth, saved as TIF files (as noted in an email from Chris Freeland, dated August 9, 2001.)

MSU JPG images were derived from the MSU TIF files. They were resized to 750-pixel width (variable length), with output to JPG format, using JASC Image Robot, version 1.1.

MoBot JPG images were derived from the MoBot TIF images. They were resized (at MSU) to 750-pixel width (variable length), with output to JPG format, using JASC Image Robot, version 1.1.

The specifications for the MSU images are the same as MSU's Sunday school book collection, which is part of the Library of Congress American Memory website. We consider the TIF images to be archival copies, not for dissemination via the web because of the large file size, although we will gladly supply copies to patrons requesting them. The JPGs are the use-copies.

It should be noted as well that the MSU and MoBot images were created from different copies of the book. MSU's copy is fairly worn, having been in general circulation for some decades (which is true of many of MSU's copies.) The color plates are tipped in and four are missing. MoBot's copy is presumably in somewhat better condition since it is intact. For the Digital Orchid Library it would be desirable to make images from the best possible physical copy.
